Jean Lamond Suffers Fatal Heart Attack

After suffering a heart attack prior to her scheduled talk with Pam Fliegel's 10th grade health class at Annandale High School, Jean Marion Lamond, 5l, died at Buffalo Hospital on the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 10. Jean was the regional coordinator of the Minnesota AIDS Project, St. Cloud office.

Members of the communities Jean served, joined family and friends on Saturday, Dec. 13, for A Celebration of Thanksgiving for the Life of Jean Lamond at Christ Church Newman Center, St. Cloud State University. Remembrances began with traditional Scottish bagpipe music at 9:15 a.m. The service took place at 10 a.m., led by the Reverend Patricia A. Gillespie, Sister Joyce Iten, OSB, and the Reverend Finian McDonald.

Born in Torphins, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Jean devoted her life to public service, first in nursing and midwifery in Scotland and Chicago, and most recently as an advocate for disadvantaged people. Groups Jean worked with include the local Gay, Bisexual, Lesbian, Transgender Youth Group, which she helped start, the Task Force on Battered Women, and the Central Minnesota Lesbian Center (CMLC) in St. Cloud. From 1994 until her death, Jean was the regional coordinator of MAP-SI. Cloud, where she was an effective and persistent voice of HIV education and awareness in St. Cloud and throughout Central Minnesota.

Jean was described as a woman of great character and wisdom by friend and MAP co-worker, Margie Plude. "I will forever hold near to my heart her passion. It embraced all that Jean held on her journey to create a wonderful day and to create balance and peace in our world," Plude said.

Jean's work at the MAP office in St. Cloud was a fulfilling time of her life, as her sister recalled in a St. Cloud Times article. "She was a registered nurse and worked as such for a long time, but got tired of it," Ann Webb said of her sister. "About two years ago, she told me she finally found her niche and really enjoyed her work."

The satisfaction of her work as a MAP regional coordinator in St. Cloud was evident to many who worked with her. "Jean's work was that of a skilled professional, tempered with a warm heart and genuine enthusiasm for herjob," said MAP Executive Director Lorraine Teel. "And while producing great work, Jean also sought to create peace and balance and often challenged the rest of us to do the same."

During her tenure at MAP, Teel remembers Jean as a woman with great talents and leadership abilities. "One of the talents I most appreciated about Jean was her ability to connect many communities together in a network to accomplish positive work," Teel said. "Jean's legacy points to positive change in this world, making it a better place for all of us."

Jean is survived by her mother, Nellie Birss Lamond of Scotland; her sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Andrew Webb of Duluth; two nieces, Annette and Angela; and her companion, Laurie Palmer of Belgrade. She was preceded in death by her father Hugh W. Lamond, and her aunt, Hilda Lamond Harris. Memorials are preferred to: Jean M. Lamond Fund of CMLC, PO Box 1582, St. Cloud, MN 56302.
