Potluck and more chance for conversation to follow the service! Please invite others to the service and/or potluck.

Statement by the Right Rev. James L. Jelinek,
Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota
In Response to the Communique following the Meeting of the Anglican Communion Primates, February 15 to 19, 2007
I am deeply saddened by the recommendations of the Primates of the Anglican Communion, meeting in Tanzania, some of which would require the Episcopal Church to, in effect, to turn back the clock on decades of hard work to provide full inclusion in the Church for all persons.
Full inclusion has been affirmed by resolutions of both the General Convention of the Episcopal Church and the Convention of the Diocese of Minnesota. A resolution passed by the 142nd Annual Convention of the Diocese of Minnesota, in October 1999, explicitly declared that we not only welcome and embrace gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons, but that we “continue to make available to them all of the Blessings of Christ's beloved Church . . ."
I, for one bishop, will not turn my back on full inclusion of all persons, which has been at the heart of the Diocese of Minnesota for 150 years-since the time when our first Bishop, Henry Benjamin Whipple, and American Indian leaders worked together to provide ministry across social boundaries.
I hope and pray that there continues to be a vital place in the Anglican Communion for divergent views on the interpretation of Scripture and the impact of modern tradition-a place for the prophetic voice which the Episcopal Church has offered over the decades for the care and well being of all persons.
This is a discussion of justice and morality that will engage the church in the months to come in which I will continue to be a hearty advocate for full inclusion for all.
+James L. Jelinek
VIII Bishop of Minnesota

Amazing Grace [Satur]day This week-end we join nearly 5000 other churches throughout the U.S. and Canada in commemorating the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in England. Two hundred years ago, British politician William Wilberforce and his band of loyal friends took on the most powerful forces of their day to end the slave trade. His mentor was John Newton, the slave-trader-turned-songwriter who wrote the world's most popular hymn, "Amazing Grace." Wilberforce's work of justice and mercy continues. Today 27 million men, women, and children are still enslaved around the globe. The website www.theamazingchange.com is a good starting point if you want to do or learn more about modern-day slavery.
Bishop's Committee Meeting next week, Saturday, February 24 at 3:30 pm at MBEC. Everyone is encouraged to participate and share in planning for the future of St. Mary's.

Wednesday Discussion (submitted by David Kess) Now in our third year, this group has been growing by changing to a noon meeting time. It still will be the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month at the Presbyterian Church, but now at noon. The next discussion, on February 21, will be on the Taize Community in France. A short video will be shown. On March 7, we will begin with Jimmy Carter's newest book, PALESTINE, PEACE NOT APARTHEID, which deals with the historical reasons that the peace process has not moved ahead between the Israelis and the Palestinians. It is a well-written and easy to read book and is Carter's 14th book since he began mediating peace negotiations in various parts of the world. In addition to our discussion, we hope to add some insight from several Ely residents with background in the Old Testament - information that will relate to the Jewish homeland question. Following that, unless the group changes its mind, we will use a book entitled, THIS I BELIEVE. Because discussion guides are provided, it is possible to be a part of the group even if one has not read the book. The atmosphere is casual and friendly - many different points of view are given and welcomed. Come and join us, and bring a "brown bag" lunch with you. We begin at noon and conclude by 1 (unless the discussion gets unusually spirited, which it often does!)
