Wednesday Discussion: (from David Kess) We will meet as usual on April 4 at noon at the Presbyterian church to continue our discussion of PALESTINE, PEACE NOT APARTHEID. If he is available, Perry Yoder [a retired, Mennonite, Old Testament scholar] may be there to speak to references in the Old Testament that are pertinent to this issue. We may decide to continue this discussion on April 18th, or perhaps move on to a new book. Several people have expressed an interest in the book THIS I BELIEVE. Jan Hogan and I both have some familiarity with it and think it to be a good choice. Its format is much like that of THE GREATEST GENERATION, in that it is a series of interviews with well known and everyday people about their personal beliefs.
A special collection will be gathered this week for Berhanu Wedaju and his wife, who has recently arrived from Ethiopia. Look for the special collection bowl on the piano.
Bring a blanket and warm coat to the Easter Vigil! We will be gathered around the fire outside for approximately the first third of the service.
Recycle your HP, Lexmark, or Dell computer ink cartridges using the prepaid mailers on the kitchen table in the church, and at the end of each month, the church will be reimbursed from one to two dollars for each cartridge.
If you have any announcements, news, reports, good web links, or other items of interest to the church community that you would like to include in this bulletin, please e-mail or call them in to Mary by Friday. groenima@hotmail.com or 365-3364

Next week on Palm Saturday-Join us for an Ethiopian Feast!
Wondering what that bread was that we shared for communion last week? It was injera, "a large, pancake-shaped substance of little nutritional value made from tef, a grain that is unique to Ethiopia. The tef dough is fermented for up to three days before it is cooked, the result of which is a foam-rubber texture and a slightly sour taste reminiscent of sherbet. Injera is normally served with a bowl of wat stew. the ritual is to take a piece of injera in your hand and use it to scoop the accompaniment into your mouth. If you dine with Ethiopians, it is normal for everyone to eat off the same plate."

Did you know this about Ethiopia?
"[T]he Ehiopian Orthodox Church is unique in its Jewish influence and the emphasis placed on …Genesis and the first part of Exodus…. Ethiopian Christianity developed in virtual isolation until the arrival of the Portuguese Jesuits in the 15th century and, although its fundamentals are indisputably Christian, the rituals are infused with all sorts of archaic Jewish influences…. Orthodox Ethiopians practice male circumcision a few days after birth, they hold regular fasting days, and the women are governed by a variety of menstruation taboos. The recognize both the Christian Sabbath of Sunday and the Jewish Sabbath of Saturday; and they indulge in celebratory religious dances…At the heart of Ehiopian mysiticism lies an unfathomable and…fascinating relationship between Christianity and the Ark of the Covenant."

Did you know this about Ethiopia?
"Contrary to Western myth, the elevated central plateau which covers half of Ethiopia's surface area and supports the large majority of the population is quite possibly the most extensive contiguous area of fertile land in the eastern side of Africa. The deserts do exist, stretching from the base of the plateau to the Kenyan border and the Red Sea and Somali coast, but they are, as you might expect, thinly populated; they have little impact on the life of most Ethiopians…. To all intents and purposes, the fertile highland plateau is Ethiopia."

From 101 Reasons to Be Episcopalian:
"Our Eucharistic table is not made less special if all are invited, which is contrary to the understanding that I grew up with. Adjusting to the idea that everyone is invited to this most holy meal took me some time, but it has become one of the things I love most about the Church. Understanding that the true presence in the body of Christ is strong enough to survive inside someone who might seem less worthy requires more, not less, faith in its power. I am saddened that I cannot share in communion at my parents' church, and that they will not receive in mine, but I would rather be in that position than the other way around.
